Shouldn't a 'news' channel report the truth? Why is it that Fox noise so often gets facts wrong, reports things out of context, and it's most popular shows are all op-ed pieces? I do watch fox on occasion as well as Olberman and Maddow (actual real news in between the judgements) and the line between fact and fiction is clear when comparing the two. Fox, on one side, gets people to protest in ugly ways that compare Obama to Hitler (ever seen footage from these events? the protestors are all white. Hardlly what America looks like today unless you believe we are all gun toting racists) while somebody like Olberman gets his viewers to donate for free health care clinics for those who don't have any. Fox is in the same category as the daily show or Colbert Report, only Fox claims that it is an actual news network. Pulease, spare us!

Love your metaphors and factual reporting, which sadly has to compete nowadays with 'paid-for' journalism.

$250 is a fee, not a fine, for a company such as the guilty.

You know, Velvet Jones is one of the few clubs left that still feature live acts. I don't see anything wrong with them starting at 9pm or 8pm for the youth, but that would probably infuriate the nearby eateries with sound. Glad they can offer that to the youth, which is in dire need of things to do in this town. With all the regulations placed on dancing, live music, curfews, the only way a club can make it in this town is to sell a ton of alcohol (or something out the back door) and hire a dj. Where is the money to pay a band? High priced Liqour? I'm sure the police and fire dept. would love to handle more obscene drunks on state st. instead of, hopefully, sober teens.

I appreciate your article and the comments so far. I feel it is necessary to call out the perps of these acts far and wide. Call it what it is. Call the people who do such things what they are. Racist, ignorant, homophobes, fear mongerers, murderers....

As for bringing jazz to the Lobero, Terence Blanchard is always welcome, though he has been a regular visitor to SB over the past decade. What is so inspiring about jazz is it's ability to be fresh, new, today. While it is nice to hear the greats such as Ron Carter and Jim Hall grace the theater, it would be nice to hear some of the younger talent as well. Kurt Rosenwinkle comes to mind as well as Robert Glasper. Any others who stray from the traditional songbook would be welcome as well. As for getting 'very good Big Bands and smaller Jazz groups' from L.A., I have to say that it didn't support the much smaller Jazz Hall on Victoria St. in the 90's when such amazing talent from that city such as Michael Session were regulars here. It seems that with the schedule of 'jazz' for the Lobero next season, all bets are on the regulars who have played the theater over the last few years.

I think it's great that we have a club like this to welcome new people to the area. I'd also like to point out the obvious economic pre-conditions that bubble throughout the whole article. "It’s a social group for those 21 through 80-something (though there’s no age cutoff), and they’re always doing something enviable, like enjoying the view from another member’s Santa Barbara mansion while sipping merlot from a Santa Barbara vineyard, or just kicking it at a local bar on a Friday night. Members have to pay for their personal expenses (like the food consumed at a restaurant) during activities or events, of which they have as many as 30 a month. All events are open to everyone" .....that can afford it.

On Knowing the Newcomers

I say it's time to stop funding wars against people who are trying to take down our government. We the people should do it for them. Come on Americans, aren't you tired of propping up the rich and corporate among us? Aren't you tired of paying for wars to kill others while our own die of sickness and hunger? Imagine throwing those billions of dollars for war, bailouts and other government scams into our own infrastructure and bailouts for our own citizens. A little common sense from our 'leaders' could sure go a long way right now...

Thank you Das for pointing out that our country will send these youth off to war but won't let them smoke a joint. We need more common sense brought into the political equation nowadays and this is but one tiny example of how we as a people are taken advantage of by our own country. Land of the free?
