Wow! I read so many stories, and Daniel's blog, as research for the column. I'm surprised so many normally reliable sources got it wrong. Thank you very much for the feedback.

Touché and true dat, SBthinks. Good points, temporism. And I hear ya, VeganRebel, but how's your self-righteous rant less "small" than mine? Alas, getting over oneself is trickier than it looks. Perhaps it wasn't clear that the "we tried to be mature" bit was written in mockery of the juvenile reactions I/we had; thanks for the schoolin'.

HUGE addict: Malted milk ball, gooey oatmeal and a fresh mint cookie thingy that makes me weep. This is the shizzle.

You are such a brave, bright and thoughtful person. I'm a great admirer and will eagerly await your occasional future Indie writings. Good luck, Penny!

Well, I'll have this column. And your kind words, Holly, to remember.

KB Toys did go bankrupt; I appreciate you (and other readers) pointing out my oversight. The only locally-owned non-chain stores at the mall, as I understand it, are Outfooters, Plaza Deli and Pizza Mizza. And this isn't a news story, it's a personal column, in which I enjoy the privilege of not having to cite sources, if doing so would temper the frankness of those quoted. But I do put my own name on my rants, which I notice you didn't, beach bum. You and I have different definitions of integrity.

On Missing My Mall

I spent a lot of time in Barbara's store and I never had anything but above-and-beyond service. The staff was courteous and well-informed about the merchandise -- which was top quality and incredibly varied for a store of its size. I'm sorry to see it go.

FANTASTIC coverage, guys. These are details no one else is reporting. Thank you.

On House-to-House Fire Battles Possible

Fair enough. And I appreciate the feedback.
For the record, though, my column didn't begin until after I started having kids. And the column I write every other week (this one, for example) is specifically a "parenting column" that runs in other newspapers, including the Ventura Star, where it's billed as "Atomic Mom."
