That savings rate is totally unrealistic. You're saying that by age 40 I should have saved an amount equal to 10% of my annual salary for every one of my 40 years? Even with compounding, that's a stretch. For me to have reached $300,000 in savings, assuming that I started at age 20 and I'm a good enough investor that I can get an annual return of 5%, and my income has been growing at 5% annually as well. Keeping the savings rate constant, I would have had to save 20% of my income every year to reach $300,000 by age 40. There isn't a country on earth that has that kind of savings rate.

Rich - The problem with the statistics you posted the link to is, as you point out, they don't reflect how many people take part in these activities. Otherwise you would conclude that being legally executed is one of the safest things you can do...
