Home Run For Obama

As a political matter, Obama's speech was big, historic, dramatic and a first-rate use of the bully pulpit in a time of national crisis.

As a policy matter, it poses huge risks for him.

He offered an out-size series of massive promises, and set down very specific markers for which he'll now be held to account: economic turnaround, a stabilized banking system, creation of a new green economy, universal health care, a college education for everyone and cutting the deficit in half in the next four years.

And, oh yeah, a cure for cancer.

That said, it was an extraordinary event to watch; I don't recall seeing other presidents kept in the chamber by a crush of congressional members eagerly asking for his autograph. Plus: 66 interruptions for applause.

Now all he has to do is deliver.
