Oscar Hopefuls Coming

A few years back, the timing of the film festival was moved to fall between Sundance and the Academy Awards. Often (or perhaps always?), that means that Oscar nominees are announced on the morning of Opening Night. And this morning, when Oscar was let out of the bag, SBIFFers couldn't have been more overjoyed.

"We are excited and proud that the Academy overwhelmingly agreed with our selections this year," said head SBIFFer Roger Durling in a press release issued this morning. "The road to the Santa Barbara International Film Festival is truly paved in Oscar gold!"

And now, the roll call:

Tributees nominated:
Kate Winslet (best actress in The Reader, being feted at SBIFF on Friday, January 23)
Penelope Cruz (best supporting actress in Vicky Cristina Barcelona, being feted at SBIFF on Saturday, January 24)
