Approaching An End

I'm about to finish my first chapter. It's been a long process - in fact, I believe that I will never be able to stop revising the thing - but what once started as a vague idea has grown into something more solidified than random thoughts. Un.be.liev.able.

I never thought I would see this day. In fact, I felt forever stuck in the tunnel of seriality (no need to further define this term - I have struggled with it over 30 pages; if anyone cares, you can read my book. No need to? That's what I thought.) Now I can see a light - or rather a small, beautiful shimmer at the horizon. The light is called deadline, and while for some people, "deadline" itself means "darkness", I for one cannot wait to attach the 30 plus pages to an email to my adviser back in Germany, then gently push the "send" button of my Outlook program and be done for the rest of the... week.

Yes, the first chapter of my dissertation is approaching an end. And, less fortunately, so is my scholarly adventure in California. Soon, I will be thinking about packing my belongings (which have miraculously outgrown the two suitcases with which I arrived in Goleta last September). I will bike down to the beach one last time, still unable to believe that I spent almost a whole year in this beautiful place. I will look back at all the bus rides to UCSB and a little forward to finally eating eatable bread again.

I will say goodbye. For now.
