Sermon #1

While you and I crept about like thieves trying to filch a sackful of meaning

out of the massive and chaotic substance of the material universe

the naked evidence of our mortality and impotence lay before us

morning into night:

A chrysalis of silence within which breathed a pale spirit,

born of matter, by matter afflicted;

brought low at the midpoint, flung down in the mud-road of life and done dirty

by the immutable laws of physics as they apply to biological systems
