Cock and Bull

This morning I have the computer to myself as well as the entire complex as the PacMan is fighting and the place is empty. I like to watch fights, I think most men do. Buddhist Master Thich Nhat Hanh asked us when a big fight was in process "Is is right action to pay a man to beat and hurt another man?". My son watches a lot of fights and sometimes I have to join him if I want his company. I find it really hard to stop watching the fighting, even when one combatant is painting the octagon with his opponent's blood.

Now Ecuador's President Rafael Correa has shown a lot of courage in asking for a ban on cockfighting and bullfighting. The cocks and bulls of course do not volunteer for the bloody sport like Manny does, nor do they get paid for their blood. They have to be barbed and lanced and tortured to get them ready to fight. I have witnessed a lot of very destructive behavior around cockfighting, women abandoned, families impoverished. If the President of Ecuador can be bold enough to bring up this subject, should not peace and justice advocates bring it up?

Best wishes, Rowland Lane Anderson, Veterans For Peace, Veritas Social Empowerment 1916 Oroquieta St, Catholic Trade Center, Sta Cruz, Manila, Philippines
