The blog is late...I know,I know.
Gee... I am sorry.
But people...I was making my audition video for Oprah...beginning Summer Semester at SBCC...going toThe Live Oak Music Festival and to top it off... a "cherry" of a disappointing Ortho visit in Santa Monica...the doc wants surgery... I do not.
Life is in session...yes?
The Oprah Audition:
I was kind of skeptical and secretly blown away that Miss Oprah was making such an offer.
But who else would do it?
Could do it?
And why would she?
An online and live open call to pitch your idea for a TV show. All I can say to this is "when preparation meets opportunity...you have to take that chance!"
Oprah is now a "brand" and when you get a "star" from her...you get your own star. So I am hanging my ego and my bottom out there to try for what 8,000 other hopefuls are calling "a chance to be "Oprah-tized!"
OWN is Oprah's new Network...all Oprah...all the time. Oprah is leaving the big network to create her own...and why not?
Why not try to become a celestial being in this new galaxy?
I have blown so many opportunities...so many. And this time...I am in it...to win it! My son said it,"Mom if 8,000 people enter than you have the same chance as those 8,000 people." And he, as always,is right.
We all deserve a second chance.
My son helped me shoot the submission and I edited online with iMovie. The nice people...and I mean tremendously nice people at the State St Apple Store and The Third Street Promenade Apple Store were insanely helpful. I want to thank them all: Larry,Sandy,Liza,Bingo,Bingo's brother...et al'.
What a great resource my One to One sessions at the Apple store have become. I am a fixture there now. Best $100 I ever spent. "The School of Apple"- rocks! I am becoming so "Apple -Smart" friends call me for advice.
The freak of the IT world.
The bain of all computer savvy "swaggerts"...I...I now know stuff about not only my Macbook Pro...but...also...my iphone...Imovie...photoshop...Final Cut...Garage Band...Handbrake and VLC.
When I went to my last One to One at the State Street Apple store to finish and publish my Oprah Audition I got a small ovation from many staff. (Who,if I get my job with Oprah,I am taking with me.)
Ya know, not long ago,I did not even know how to use a high end video camera, editing equipment, lights, microphones, graphics, music,VO. I had worked with people who worked all of it and I coordinated the work...but I did not DO the work. But now...Missy Lizzy (if her back felt better) could load up and hit the road and make a documentary about...anything...or a PSA...or film...or a...ANYTHING.
You know, the freedom I feel right now is just... stunning. I already used the word "zizzing" in the last blog...so how about...."sudzy"..and girls you know what I mean.
Now for the women...and men who have taken back their lives...who have gotten sober or sane or both. Here's to you. Now go out and use some of that "recovered YOU" and do something great.
What is great?
For me..."Great" is a personal thing. Something you do that is a little brave...a little wonderful...a little about someone other than myself and more than anything "great" is something that takes me out of my comfort zone and shows me my humanity....something that reminds me I am a part of something greater than my scrawny little "monkey" skin. The house I come from is the house we all come from...and my family is the world.
I could not be,and do and find all the things I find every day if I did not "human-up" and ask for help...every day. The whole idea about the Oprah audition came from a teacher...who pushed me...out of my comfort zone. He watched me in class one day...doing an interview and he said..."you have "it"....you have that thing...you can talk to people...ask questions...and they tell you things...honest things...you should do a show."
I laughed and laughed and laughed.
Remember the scene from "Julie/Julia" when Julia has just received a rejection letter and her husband Paul (Stanley Tucci...still love you...big smoochie kisses forever) says..."You can teach...you...YOU can do a show"...and Julia (Meryl Streep)..."oh Paul...no...a talk show!"
And history was made!
I don't think a good talk show is about being young or pretty or dressed in couture. It is about good information and great connection. It is about being open and honest and getting other folks to open their hearts and their minds. I think my idea.... a daily show about Sober Living... is an idea whose time has come.
I think...in my own spiritual center...that the time for a talk show about day-to-day sober living is here. And you know why? It is because of you guys. What you write to me in the "comments" and emails at 2 A.M. You live in sobriety and with sobriety....you open up and let me in and I hope in some small way I help.
Maybe I just remind you of something...something you know or knew and then you remind me of the same. We are in a kind of "Universal tango". Like the lovely sway of the tango, life is the dance of sadness and loss...the dance of love and hope. Sometimes you lead and I follow...sometimes I lead and you follow. There is such freedom in knowing how to follow.
When I was a teenager I danced Competitive Ballroom Disco in Gay Bars on Cheshire Bridge Road in Atlanat. I had a dance partner, what a guy. He sold mens clothing at Neiman Marcus ( or as we called it..."Needless Markup") He was a nice man from Brazil and he taught me how to follow. He always said if you are a good lead then following is easy and it should not be hard to follow a good lead. You have to let go and let God. Surrender to the dance.
So right now...this moment is me following...my heart...my friends...Oprah's call...the Apple Store kids guidance and following my faith. My faith that I am exactly where I need to be,doing exactly what I need to be doing and I am choosing to do it with all the verve have.
So here are some words to the wise...some quotes to move and groove you...
Until one is committed
There is hesitancy, the chance to draw back,
Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation),
There is one elementary truth,
The ignorance of which kills countless ideas
And splendid plans: That the moment one definitely commits oneself,
Then Providence moves too.
All sorts of things occur to help one
That would never otherwise have occurred.
A whole stream of events issues from the decision
Raising in one's favor all manner
Of unforeseen incidents and meetings
And material assistance,
Which no man could have dreamt
Would have come his way.
I have learned a deep respect for one of Goethe's couplets:
"Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it.
Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it."
-- W.H. Murray, from The Scottish Himalayan Expedition
Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else.
-- Judy Garland
Come to the edge.
We might fall.
Come to the edge.
It's too high!
Come to the edge!
And they came,
and he pushed,
and they flew.
-- Christopher Logue
Do you want me to tell you something really subversive? Love is everything it's cracked up to be. That's why people are so cynical about it. . . . It really is worth fighting for, being brave for, risking everything for. And the trouble is, if you don't risk anything, you risk even more.
-- Erica Jong
Dream lofty dreams, and as you dream, so you shall become. Your vision is the promise of what you shall one day be; your ideal is the prophecy of what you shall at last unveil.
-- James Allen
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
-- Reinhold Niebuhr
I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good, therefore, that I can do or any kindness I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it for I shall not pass this way again.
-- Stephen Grellet
If one advances confidently in the direction of one's dreams, and endeavors to live the life which one has imagined, one will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.
-- Henry David Thoreau
It's the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting......Before a dream is realized, the Soul of the World tests everything that was learned along the way. It does this not because it is evil, but so that we can, in addition to realizing our dreams master the lessons we have learned as we have moved toward that dream. That's the point at which most people give up.... (At this point0 Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams, because every second of search is a second's encounter with God and with eternity.
-- Paulo Coelho
Life is a big canvas, throw all the paint on it you can.
-- Danny Kaye
Love grows by giving. The love we give away is the only love we keep. The only way to retain love is to give it away.
-- Elbert Hubbard
Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence.
Talent will not; nothing is more common than
unsuccessful people with talent.
Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb.
Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts.
Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.
The slogan "press on" has solved and always will solve
the problems of the human race.
-- Calvin Coolidge
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine, as children do.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
-- Marianne Williamson
The credit belongs to those who are actually in the arena, who strive valiantly; who know the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, and spend themselves in a worthy cause; who at the best, know the triumph of high achievement; and who, at the worst, if they fail, fail while daring greatly, so that their place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.
-- Theodore Roosevelt
The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, gifted ability, or skill. It will make or break a company, a church, a home.
The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace from that day. We cannot change our past, we cannot change the fact that people will act in certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing that we can do is play on the one string that we have and this string is, Attitude. I am convinced that life is ten percent what happens to me and ninety percent how I react to it. And so it is with you....We are in charge of our Attitudes.
-- Charles Swindoll
The most beautiful things in the world are not seen nor touched. They are felt with the heart.
-- Helen Keller
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.
-- Mark Twain
We come to love not by finding a perfect person, but by learning to see an imperfect person perfectly.
-- Sam Keen
What a different story people would have to tell if they would adopt a definite purpose and stand by that purpose until it had time to become an all-consuming purpose.
-- Napoleon Hill
Whether you think you can or think you can't - you are right.
-- Henry Ford
You don't get to choose how you're going to die. Or when. But you can decide how you're going to live now.
-- Joan Baez
You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing which you think you cannot do.
-- Eleanor Roosevelt
You were born an original. Don't die a copy.
-- John Mason
The greatest achievement was at first and for a time a dream. The oak sleeps in the acorn, the bird waits in the egg, and in the highest vision of the soul a waking angel stirs. Dreams are the seedlings of realities.
-- James Allen
