Last night I opened a bottle of Ken Brown's 2007 Cargasacchi Vineyard Pinot Noir, and it was everything I hoped it would be. And believe me-- after tasting his line-up a couple months ago, I had high hopes for this one.
Like he so enthusiastically discussed with me, because the fruit in this Pinot comes from the north end of the Santa Rita Hills, its features an old world earthiness that seems so painfully elusive in California sometimes.
The wine also has a spicy finish quite unlike anything I've experienced before. Different than the type of flavor I would typically call "spicy" in a wine, this Pinot created the illusion of actual spiciness with a wondrously fine and crisp acidity.
Ken Brown is one of the pioneers of Santa Barbara's wine industry, and his long experience working in the vineyards and cellars of Santa Barbara clearly shows through his wines.
