Colour the Small One

(Astralwerks; January 2006) Strange coincidence that
Adelaide-born singer/songwriter Sia debuted her second full-length
album, Colour The Small One, in the U.S. during Australia Week.
We’d have taken notice anyway – as we have since she first hit our
ears a few years back with her distinctive vocal contributions to
Zero 7’s down-tempo Simple Things. The first single, the
melancholic “Breathe Me,” appeared on Six Feet Under and became an
instant sensation. The rest of the album delivers soulful acoustic
trip-hop with a low-key vibe, lush instrumentals, and languorous,
growling vocals reminiscent of Tori Amos or Lisa Germano. Though at
times repetitive, overall this slow-burning collection is an
excellent chill-out affair.
