Candidates scrambling for the County Board of Supervisors’ 2nd
District seat, which represents most of Goleta Valley and some of
the City of Santa Barbara, debated last Saturday at a forum
sponsored by Santa Barbara Community Action Network. On the
question of the South Coast housing crunch, Janet Wolf favored
employer-supplied housing; Das Williams supported offering home
loans to county employees and requiring 50 percent of new housing
along a section of Hollister be reserved for people with low or
very low incomes; neighborhood advocate Joe Guzzardi proposed
restraining the business growth that creates a need for workforce
housing; while Dan Secord said he favored including some percentage
of below-market units in new condo developments. Also this week,
Williams racked up key Democratic endorsements, including the
Democratic Women, the Santa Barbara County Young Democrats, and the
Santa Barbara County Democratic Central Committee. The Sierra Club
was torn, endorsing both Williams and his chief rival for the
progressive vote, Janet Wolf.
