GUNS AND HOSES FOR WOLF

2nd District supervisor candidate Janet Wolf got a major shot in
the arm this week, securing the plum endorsements of five public
safety unions: city police, county sheriffs, deputy district
attorneys, and the county and city fire departments. Her rival Dan
Secord reportedly so antagonized leaders of the county fire
department’s union—“shooting himself in the foot with a Howitzer,”
according to one observer—that they adopted an “Anybody-but-Dan”
policy. Secord—a fiscally conservative, but socially liberal
Republican—has frequently run afoul of union endorsements. And
candidate Das Williams lost favor with the city police union for
bloodying the nose of City Councilmember Iya Falcone, who enjoys
enthusiastic police support. Since public safety unions like to run
in a pack, the fight for the endorsements came down to Wolf and
neighborhood preservationist and slow-growther Joe Guzzardi. And
Guzzardi—who works for the county fire department as an emergency
planner—was regarded as too much of a long shot. Throughout the
campaign, Williams and Wolf have fought for the hearts and minds of
Democratic voters. While Wolf has the public—and financial—support
of leaders in the party establishment, Williams has appealed more
to the activist base. This week, he announced the endorsement of
Linda Krop—chief counsel of the Environmental Defense Center—and
Bob Sollen—a former News-Press environmental reporter and longtime
Sierra Club member.
