VOTE BY NUMBERS: As of Wednesday morning – two days after the
voter registration deadline – the number of voters registered
countywide for the June 6 election totaled 181,888 out of a county
population of 400,000. Of those registered, 15,435 have already
cast absentee ballots. Almost 74,000 are Democrats, compared to
66,000 Republicans and 33,000 who declined to state a party
affiliation. Also-rans include the American Independent Party with
almost 3,700 voters, the Greens with 2,400, and the Libertarians
with 1,041; the New Labor Party and the Peace and Freedom Party
garnered followers in the three digits. Registration cards
postmarked on or before May 22 continue to trickle in and be
counted. There were 213,194 registered voters in the 2004 general
election.
