Aiming to make marijuana the lowest police priority in town,
Sensible Santa Barbara – an organization exclusively committed to
promoting a ganja-friendly ordinance – submitted more than 11,500
signatures of support to the city clerks for certification last
week, in hopes of either getting the item on the November ballot or
before the City Council sometime before then. The group also
released results from an Evans/McDonough Co. survey conducted
locally during the past few months; it indicated that 73 percent of
local residents feel that criminalizing marijuana is “clogging
courts and wasting tax dollars.” A spokesperson for the Santa
Barbara Police Department commented that marijuana offenses are
already pretty low on the totem poll, and usually only receive
police attention if they are specifically complained about by
citizens.
