Congressman Elton Gallegly, the Republican who
represents much of Santa Barbara County, was inducted into the
Border Control Hall of Fame this week by the U.S. Border Control, a
nonprofit organization that believes the United States’ sovereignty
is threatened by illegal immigration.

A fracas over Little League baseball and
AYSO soccer erupted at Carpinteria City
Hall Monday night. At issue was alleged baseball
favoritism by Carp mayor Brad Stein, whom Carpinterians for Ethical
Government (CEG) have accused of inappropriate conduct in a clash
between AYSO and the Carpinteria Valley Little League over use of
sports fields. CEG spokesmen Alan Alpers said the mayor – also a
Little League board member – persuaded policymakers to favor
baseball over soccer. A number of Stein supporters responded by
accusing Alpers and the CEG of politicizing the soccer/baseball
issue, since the complaints come just as Stein stands for
reelection on November 7.

Gubernatorial hopeful Phil Angelides rolled
through Santa Barbara this week, stopping at Oak Park Monday
evening for a campaign rally. Joined by Pedro Nava, Congresswoman
Lois Capps, Jack O’Connell and several local educators, Angelides
promised the 80 people in attendance that a “Democratic
tidal wave” will sweep the nation on November 7. As for
the particulars of his own race, Angelides accused Governor
Schwarzenegger of continued negligence toward public education, the
environment, and energy issues.
