Honkytonk Homeslice‘s Honkytonk Homeslice

Bill Nershi‘s folk-inspired bluegrassy side
project, Honkytonk Homeslice, is a melodic trio comprised, of
course, of Nershi (the String Cheese
Incident’
s guitarist/singer/songwriter extraordinaire), his
wife Jilian (guitarist/singer/songwriter), and
their good friend Scott Law
(mandolinist/guitarist/singer/songwriter). SCI’s bassist
Keith Moseley also makes a guest appearance on
this self-titled studio debut.

The album’s feel is mostly acoustic, with some added lap steel
picking by Billy and electric guitar picking by Law. The opening
tune “Shot in the Blue,” which was written by Law, boasts
intoxicating and harmonious vocals blended with the raw
instrumental talent of each player. It’s the perfect upbeat start
to the 13-song album. “Weary Homesick Blues,” by Billy, follows and
is my personal favorite, as its relaxed feel just puts a smile on
my face. Jilian’s “Another River” is a beautiful example of her
exceptional songwriting skills, and lends itself a powerful message
about nature. “School Bells” features a duet between the husband
and wife, swirling with “ain’t gonna worry” and “ain’t gonna cry”
lyrics into a wonderful and carefree little ditty. This debut album
certainly is a captivating one, exuding an overall soothing feel.
Nicely done!
