Unless you’ve been under a rock for the past week, you know that
the UCSB Gauchos chalked up their first national championship in
decades when the men’s soccer team beat UCLA 2-1 on Sunday,
December 3, in St. Louis. For the round-up of that, see Ethan
Stewart’s story.

For a different sort of round-up, what follows below is a
collection of YouTube videos posted over the past week, showing
just what happens when UCSB students celebrate a national
championship. While we can never advocate throwing plastic things
into the ocean, we do support the enthusiasm and creative urges of
these Gauchos. If you didn’t hear, they tossed a goal into the sea.
If you didn’t see the footage, now you can.

This the actual goal getting tossed into the
ocean.

This one’s almost two minutes, perhaps the best of the bunch.

This one has some funny commentary, ending with, “This is what
happens when your school never wins a national
championship.”

This one shows excitement and on-the-move action by the
volunteer cinematographers.

This one is general revelry at Dublins in Isla Vista after the
final tally.

Here’s the end of the TV coverage, with some good discussion of
how UCSB was able to pull it off.

And this is crowd footage from the game itself.

So there’s our week-late, but hopefully entertaining round-up of
those silly Gauchos. National championships, Nobel Prizes, top
partying credentials. What else can a town ask for?
