About 150 MarBorg workers and their families participated in a
somber silent candlelight vigil in MarBorg’s yard on the lower
Eastside to mark the death of a 26-year-old mechanic who was
recently crushed to death between two trash trucks in an industrial
accident. Speaking in Spanish, a Catholic priest performed an
elaborate blessing of the site where the mechanic, Erik Carillo,
was killed and of the trucks that he was crushed between.

In observance of the one-year anniversary of the Goleta postal
shootings, post office administrators will hold a memorial for the
five slain employees on Tuesday, January 30. The ceremony will
include the dedication of olive trees in the victims’ memory. Some
family members of the victims have refused to attend. Among other
reasons, Sherie Higgins said she objected to the service being held
at the site of the murder of her daughter, Maleka. Higgins, who
stressed she was not speaking on behalf of any other victims’
families, said she will attend a separate service.
