A UCSB graduate living in Switzerland allegedly wrote a letter to UCSB’s student paper, the Daily Nexus, claiming he was a witness to the 1969 bombing of the campus’s Faculty Club, which killed live-in custodian Dover Sharp. The UC police department has taken the letter as evidence and is once again looking into the attack, the 38th anniversary of which was on 4/11. The explosion was never tied to any culprit but is believed to have been a part of the student antiwar movement, which also resulted in the burning of Isla Vista’s Bank of America building in 1970.

In an effort to increase recycling in Isla Vista, students with UCSB’s Environmental Affairs Board are replacing the old tan residential recycling bins with 118 95-gallon blue containers. The “Blue I.V.” campaignwhich also has students going door-to-door to explain recyclingis sponsored by the Shoreline Preservation Fund and the Santa Barbara County Department of Public Works.

The UCSB Interfraternity Council has offered to host Fight Night, an annual Isla Vista event in which fraternity members spar to raise money for Say Yes to Kids, an after-school program that aims to teach youngsters boxing fundamentals. The event’s usual host, Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, was suspended last fall for violating a Greek conduct code that prohibits hazing, serving alcohol at social events, and other activities. UCSB’s Associated Students Finance Board allotted the event $19,652 on 4/16, in hopes that Fight Night will continue to support Say Yes to Kids.
