Granada to Restore Historic Marquee Design

The Granada Theater on State Street will remove its marquee tomorrow, May 3, in preparation for a new design that will match the original theater’s 1924 marquee. This is part of the larger Granada Restoration Project that plans to renovate and reopen the theater by March 2008.

“This is a monumental next step forward in the final phase of The Granada’s restoration,” Executive Director Peter Frisch said today a press release. “The new marquee will be fabricated to match the aesthetics of the original from the theatre’s 1924 opening.”

Fernando Duarte Design of San Francisco will lead the redesign and fabrication of The Granada marquee. The project is set to unveil in early 2008, anticipating the theater’s grand reopening.

The 1924 facility, which is being converted into a performing arts center, was originally scheduled to open in fall 2005. The Santa Barbara Center for Performing Arts started the estimated $50 million dollar renovation project in 1988. When completed, the theater will accommodate 1,500 people and serve as a year-round venue for local arts organizations, including the Santa Barbara Symphony.
