Ever since Measure P, the ballot measure to relax enforcement of marijuana laws, passed with an overwhelming majority last November, city officials have questioned its legality. This week, the American Civil Liberties Union announced that it will be defending Heather Poet, who sponsored the bill and is consequently facing a lawsuit from the city. Santa Barbara City Attorney Steve Wiley commented that the lawsuit is not vindictive or punitive, but rather is the only way the city can get answers to its legal questions.
