Liz surfing in the Galapagos
Liz Clark

About two weeks ago, Captain Liz set sail from the safe harbors of Central America, with the bow of Swell pointed straight at the South Pacific. In what will be the longest – and perhaps most grueling – passage of her trip, the former Endless Summer bartender is joined by her fearless mother in her trans-Pacific crossing. In the coming days, the Captains log will be updated much more frequently as Liz and her Mom faces the trials and tribulations of an approximately 4 week tour of the wide open expanses of the Pacific – a stretch of water that brought many a lesser sailor to his or her knees.

Hi!

This is a quick note to let you all know that my mom and I finally left the Galapagos and are headed across the Pacific for the Marquesas! I was so busy getting ready for the trip and enjoying the islands that I haven’t yet written my update for April/May. But now I have plenty of time, so be patient…it will be coming soon. Meanwhile my photos are already posted on my photo blog.

Our current position is South 2 degrees 23 minutes, West 92 degrees 9 minutes. We are motoring through the doldrums, hoping to find the trade winds in the next 24 hours. The sun is blasting down on as glassy an ocean as a surfer could ever wish for, but without any reef or beach for many miles, we just keep rising up and down the watery masses of the six-foot swells as they billow below the hull like a giant sheet. With the help of the South Equatorial Current, we’re zipping along at 7 knots! As the little sailor in me re-emerges, though, I am getting as excited to see wind ripples as I would be to see a set pouring over the horizon from the beach.

I will be sending updates regularly throughout the passage. Feel free to drop us a note to remind us that there are humans on this earth somewhere.

In other news…I wrote an article for latest issue of the new adventure magazine, WEND. Swell and I are also being featured in the August Travel Issue of Surfing Magazine. Check it out.

Only 2,884 miles to go. I’m betting 23 days, but my mom’s sayin’ 25.

Hope all is well where you are!!

Blue skies to you…over and out for now.

Love, Liz
