An energy drink made by Carpinteria’s FRS, Inc., formerly known as New Sun Nutrition, will be carried in 7-Eleven convenience stories on the West Coast, the company announced on July 11. The energy drink, called FRS, which stands for Free Radical Scavenging, features quercetin as its active ingredient.

A bioflavinoid found in red onions, grapes, apples, and berries, quercetin was the subject of a $1.1 million double-blind placebo-controlled Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency-funded study at Appalachian State University in 2006 which concluded that the compound sustained mental performance in physically stressed subjects.” It also reduced incidence of viral illness, according to the study, whose subjects were bicyclists.

“Aggressively growing the convenience store shelf placement” of the beverage is a major company priority, according to company spokesperson Amanda Bartz, adding that the brand caters to consumers wanting a healthier alternative to high-sugar, high-caffeine energy drinks. Earlier this year, FRS became an official sponsor of the Discovery Pro Cycling Team.
