On 8/7 the City Council discussed extending the life of the city’s Redevelopment Agency – which expires in 2012 – in order to generate the funds needed to subsidize affordable housing costs. At least 20 percent of the agency’s current budget is allocated for affordable housing. The council debate, in response to a Grand Jury report on affordable housing, included disputes over the fact that the housing mandates are simply not reasonable, and pointed out that the Grand Jury undercounted the number of affordable units City Hall has provided by 42.
