Due to as much as $20,000 in theater equipment stolen from Santa Barbara High School’s auditorium last weekend, the scheduled 5/9 opening of the school’s spring musical has been postponed. Otto Layman, director of the theater department, said that computer equipment from the box office, as well as theater lights and microphones, were stolen after thieves pried the door open. Layman plans to install surveillance cameras to prevent further theft.

Santa Barbara City College students marched from their campus to City Hall on 4/21 in protest over $5.4 billion in state education cuts that they say will result in too many students not being able to attend institutes of higher learning. Planned alongside similar rallies at colleges across the state, the march also sought to raise awareness about Measure V, which could net the campus funds for improvements.

Gaucho swimmers participating in World Swim Against Malaria on 4/19 raised $4,071 by swimming 5,500 meters. The money will go toward purchasing mosquito nets for children in malaria-affected developing nations.
