This album identifies the band as your model indie rock outfit. Alongside its trademark tap-dancing percussionist and flashy outfitting, the band’s newest collection of tracks is all bouncy enthusiasm that remains strong throughout. The five-piece claims that O is the stepping stone album that will move them toward a “brand new musical path.” Specifically, it’s chockfull of harmonization between lyrics, arrangement, and instrumentation that evokes each song’s tone. Specifically, “Cacophony” mixes galloping tap dance beats (courtesy of bandmember Jamie Pressnall) with chanting vocals, awkward piano, and out of place trumpets to produce a euphoniously dissonant rock-out. Much of O comfortably rests on combining atypical instruments and upbeat patterns with thoughtful lyrics, in turn creating a record that is delightfully upbeat.
