The Foundation for Girsh Park this week received a $500,000 donation from the Girsh and Hochman families-descendants of Lester and Viola Girsh, for whom the park is named-in furtherance of the Fields Forever 2 campaign, which seeks to install synthetic grass on the playing fields at the 25-acre Goleta park so that they can support sports year round. Those wanting to contribute to the goal of $1.25 million can do by visiting girshpark.org.

Two more candidates filed on 8/13 to run for the three open seats on the Goleta Water Board. James Marino, an attorney who attends board meetings regularly, and Larry Mills, a business owner and former boardmember, will compete with incumbent Harry De Witt, as well as Lauren Hansen and Bill Rosen, for the open seats. Incumbents Chuck Evans and Lynette Mills will not seek reelection.

A PUEBLO-sponsored rally outside the downtown library on 8/15 drew protestors in mock graduation gowns to symbolize the plight of college students who are undocumented residents and therefore cannot get financial aid. Attendees spoke in favor of the Dream Act, or SB 1301, which would allow non-citizens to get financial aid. Critics and supporters of the measure, however, concede that Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger will likely veto it when it crosses his desk later this month. (/dreamact)

The Citipix Collection, a series of more than 500,000 aerial images of 65 major U.S. cities, was donated to UCSB last week by the Santa Barbara-based Pacific Western Aerial Surveys. The striking bird’s-eye-view photos, valued at $14.3 million, will be stored at UCSB’s Davidson Library. (/citipix)
