The Goleta Pier Angler Center, a multi-purpose marine education center, was opened by county officials and anglers on Friday, September 12. The center has replaced a restroom which “was an eyesore,” according to Director of Parks Dan Hernandez as quoted in a press release, and now provides the community with a variety of learning tools geared to educate anglers on how fish responsibly in order to preserved the marine environment. Both County Parks and UPSAC (the United Pier & Shore Anglers of California) were involved in the renovation, which 2nd District Supervisor Janet Wolf commented on, saying, “County Parks and UPSAC deserved kudos for crafting this partnership and accomplishing this renovation that will especially benefit families and kids who want to fish responsibly.”

The Angler Center will also be performing daily pier cleanings, maintaining fishing-line bins intended to prevent sea birds from getting injured, discarding tackle, and taking care of injured birds. This resource also provides information on fishery regulation, fish identification cards, and pamphlets detailing safe catch-and-release practices. The goal of the Angler Center is to create a welcoming environment for visitors as well as to set an example in terms of safe practices for other piers to follow.
