At 6:24 this morning, an earthquake with an epicenter roughly three miles northwest of Montecito sent rumbles throughout the South Coast. Short-lived and surprisingly loud, the early morning shaker was believed by some to be a sonic boom. According to the U.S. Geological Survey Web site, the earthquake measured a mild 2.8 on the Richter scale.

There have been no reports of damage or injury.
