A 63-year-old man from Carpinteria named Jim Earl Mitchell has been missing since Wednesday, November 5, and the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department is hoping the public can help located him.

Jim Earl Mitchell

Deputies first check on Mitchell’s whereabouts on Friday, November 7, at about 1 p.m. They visited his home on the 2700 block of Torito Road after learning that he had not been seen since two days prior. They discovered that Mitchell was not home and determined that there had been no foul play, but learned that neighbors reported he had been acting “a little out of the ordinary,” according to the department’s press release. Based on such reports, they believe that Mitchell is despondent and may be a danger to himself.

The search and rescue experts were called out, and looked for Mitchell on foot, with dogs, and in a helicopter, but to no avail. A reverse 911 call also went out to the neighborhood, but that has also not yet worked.

Anyone who knows where Mitchell might be is encouraged to call the Sheriff’s Department at 692-5743 or, simply, by calling 911. But deputies do not want the public to approach Mitchell due to his potential danger.
