Calling all self-appointed weather buffs in Santa Barbara County: Your observations are needed by the Oxnard office of the National Weather Service.

Those interested in helping the National Weather Service can put their observation skills to good use and become official weather spotters by attending the online “Spotter School” training course at the organization’s Web site. One they’ve watched an educational slideshow and passed a short test, they will be assigned a personal spotter identification number and receive a packet of information via mail explaining how the program works. As a certified spotter, you can call the National Weather Service hotline 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to leave your spotter reports about weather phenomenon.

For further information about the program and how to get involved, contact Curt Kaplan at curt.kaplan@noaa.gov or (805) 988-6615 ext. 461.
