Where: 331 Motor Way (across from the City Lot on State and Gutierrez streets), 805-845-5379

What: Santa Barbara’s newest breakfast and lunch spot featuring Acai Bowls and freshly blended vitamin packed smoothies

How much? From $5.50 for a small Original Bowl to $9.25 for a large Backyard Bowl

The dish: The energy boosting antioxidant-rich superfood that is the Acai berry has the Santa Barbara spotlight shining brightly on it at the newly opened Backyard Bowls. Acai (pronounced ah-sigh-EE) is native to the Amazon rainforest in Brazil where the Acai is extracted from the pulp of the berry after harvesting. Its rich berry-cocoa flavor, deep purple color, and plump age-defying antioxidants are described as “one of the most nutritious and powerful foods in the world.” Backyard Bowls serves up smoothly blended acai that is thick enough to eat with a spoon and tops it with crunchy granola, fresh berries and bananas, and a drizzle of honey. Among the acai bowls the menu features premium quality all natural smoothies (none of which include any ice cream or frozen yogurt as an ingredient), steaming oatmeal bowls with Himalayan goji berries, granola, cottage cheese bowls, and yerba matte tea. The fresh, filling-yet-light meal in a bowl is a jazzy way to give you oomph in the morning, post-workout, or to prevent a mid-afternoon workday slump.
