A final report on air quality on city property now used for Summer Solstice Celebration workshops indicates some contamination. The property at 631 Garden Street served for decades as a motor pool refueling station. Gas vapor inside was such that spending 90 days a year there for five years would increase someone’s chances of getting cancer by more than one in a million, but less than one in 100,000. Santa Barbara mayoral candidate Justin Michael appeared briefly on the 3/19 Oprah Winfrey Show to discuss his personal experience with domestic violence. Michael was arrested in 2007 for punching and strangling a woman he was living with and has served one year of a three-year probation sentence. In his bid for mayor, Michael said he hopes to identify with the younger-than-40 block of voters and to fuse the new and old elements of the county. (/jmike326)

The Santa Barbara Peoples’ Coalition rallied on 3/19 at the corner of Carrillo and Chapala streets to mark the sixth anniversary of the Iraq War. The group of social justice activist organizations called for President Barack Obama to live up to his campaign promise and remove all U.S. troops from Iraq by 2010. Lois Hamilton, the Coalition’s MoveOn.org coordinator, also expressed the group’s objection against any surge of U.S. troops in Afghanistan. (/war326)
