The Board of Supervisors announced on 6/10 the hiring of the county’s new fire chief. Los Angeles County Deputy Fire Chief Michael Dyer, with more than 30 years firefighting experience, was chosen over Tom Franklin, who since November 2008 had been serving as interim fire chief. Supervisor Joe Centeno said the supervisors had a difficult time coming to a consensus, but are pleased with their decision.

With SBCC’s students out for the summer and UCSB’s soon to follow, the county will repeat its unique trash management program for move-out day in Isla Vista. Trash collection services will be run daily until 6/26, and reusable items will be sold to benefit area nonprofits in the Embarcadero Hall parking lot. During last year’s move-out, more than a million pounds of trash was discarded by Isla Vista residents.
