The debates on the proposed overhaul of the national healthcare system continued this week with a conversation at the University Club between Dr. James Kahn and Carpinteria City Councilmember Joe Armendariz, who spoke to a packed house on Monday night. While Kahn cited the 40 million to 50 million uninsured and 100 million under-insured Americans as evidence that “our system is broken,” Armendariz countered that greater competition would ensure lower costs, advocated for deregulation, and argued that more information is needed to make Americans “more intelligent, discriminating consumers.”
