Match Moved to Pauley Pavilion
TOP SPORTING EVENTS: JANUARY 18-FEBRUARY 1
Because of water leaking into Robertson Gym, UCLA will host Wednesday’s volleyball match against UCSB at Pauley Pavilion. The second scheduled match between the two schools on Feb. 17 will be played at UCSB.
UCSB has a rare opportunity to kick a UCLA volleyball team when it’s down Wednesday night (Jan. 20). The Bruins are mired in a four-match losing streak. They are 0-2 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and 1-4 overall.
The Gauchos (1-1, 1-4) picked up their first victory last Saturday night, holding off UC San Diego in five games – the fourth time a UCSB match has gone the distance this year. The scores were 26-30, 30-24, 27-30, 30-27 and 15-13. Jeff Menzel had 25 kills for the Gauchos, who scored match point on a block by Blaine Nielsen and Scott Slaughter.
UCLA, which has won 19 NCAA men’s volleyball championships, was swept by Pepperdine last weekend after losing to USC, the pre-season pick to win the MPSF title, in four games.
In college basketball, UCSB, Westmont College and SBCC all will have home games Saturday night.
There may be some postponements of this week’s high school soccer matches if the rainfall lives up to predictions.
