“Chang not charity” is the motto of The Fund for Santa Barbara’s Spring 2010 Grant-Making cycle, and the organization is currently accepting applications for grants. The Fund is a nonprofit group that helps support local organizations working for social, economic, environmental, and political changes in Santa Barbara County.

The fund has helped over 800 organizations since its conception in 1980 and has provided more than $4 million worth of funds, with an average grant amount of $6,000 and a maximum amount of $10,000.

The Fund for Santa Barbara purportedly only offers support for small organizations that seek to encourage, promote, or directly affect social change, but it is also open to bigger organizations on a target-oriented basis. Representatives of the Fund say that it prefers to focus on grass-roots campaigns that will help to stimulate change rather than provide a quick fix.

The organization is also providing free grant-writing workshops and strongly encourages any potential applicants to attend and learn how to write their application. Dates and locations of the workshops are as follows:

Tuesday, February 9, 12:00 noon to 1:30 p.m., Fund for Santa Barbara Office, 26 West Anapamu Street, Santa Barbara

Wednesday, February 17, 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Anderson Recreation Center, 125 West Walnut, Lompoc
