TOP SPORTING EVENTS: FEBRUARY 26-MARCH 7

Basketball fans can contribute to international relief efforts by attending a college game this weekend. Donations of shoes for the earthquake victims in Haiti will be accepted at the UCSB women’s game Saturday afternoon (Feb. 27), and Westmont College will be donating proceeds from its Monday night men’s game to the Not For Sale Campaign against human trafficking.

The Gaucho women will face the Cal Poly Mustangs in their home finale. Tipoff is at 2 p.m. There will be a bin at the front entrance of the Thunderdome for shoes that will be donated to Soles4Souls Inc. All types of shoes will be accepted – athletic, running, dress, sandals, pumps, heels, work boots, cleats, dance, flip-flops – just as long as they are new or gently worn.

The game is significant for UCSB’s women in the run-up to the Big West Tournament. A victory by the Gauchos will keep alive their faint hopes of finishing in fourth place, which would give them a bye in the first round of the tournament. The Gaucho men, meanwhile, are alone in first place and take a six-game winning streak against Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo on Saturday night.

Westmont’s men also have a six-game winning streak heading into their game at Vanguard on Saturday. They will finish the regular season at Murchison Gym on Monday night against 24th-ranked Azusa Pacific. Proceeds from the game will go to Free2Play, a program that raises awareness of the Not For Sale Campaign at athletic events.

SBCC will travel to face top-seeded Fullerton College in the Southern Cal Regional women’s basketball playoffs Saturday night. The Vaqueros advanced by defeating L.A. Southwest 88-72 on Wednesday. Giovanna Aplin and Jake Kelly each scored 20 points.

In high school sports, the CIF playoffs are getting down to the cream of the crop. Dos Pueblos High is one game away from a perfect season in girls water polo. The Chargers, 30-0, will face Newport Harbor in the Division 1 final at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in Irvine. Dos Pueblos has already beaten the Sailors twice – 7-4 at the Newport Invitational and 6-5 at the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions – but this one is for all the marbles.

Santa Barbara High and Dos Pueblos will host Division 2 boys soccer semifinal matches on Tuesday. Both teams came from behind to score 2-1 victories in the quarterfinals, the Dons overcoming Saddleback and the Chargers topping Corona in overtime. In girls soccer, Laguna Blanca and Cate are playing quarterfinal games on the road today (Feb. 26).
