The track and field at City College’s La Playa stadium—used extensively by South Coast residents as well as college students—will be completely shut down from 5/17-8/31 for major renovations. School officials say the current track, installed 24 years ago, is so old it constitutes a safety hazard to those who use it. It will be replaced with a new synthetic surface in December, but in August will be reopened with a temporary asphalt surface. The synthetic grass playing field, installed in 2002, will be replaced first. School officials estimate the renovations could cost as much as $2 million, which will be paid for with Measure V bond funds, approved by Community College District voters in 2008.
