TOP SPORTING EVENTS: MAY 11-17
The CIF Southern Section-Toyota Championships are underway this week in boys volleyball and tennis. Hosting first-round matches in volleyball Tuesday, May 11, are Channel League champion Dos Pueblos High, runner-up Santa Barbara, and Condor League champion Cate. Santa Barbara is the section’s No. 2-ranked team in tennis, behind University of Irvine, and the Dons will host a wild-card team Wednesday afternoon.
The baseball playoffs will start next week, and it’s still up in the air who will finish 1-2-3 in the Channel League. The Santa Barbara Dons can clinch first place by winning their two games against Buena this week. San Marcos needs a win over Ventura to secure a playoff spot. The Royals play Ventura twice this week around a Wednesday makeup game against Dos Pueblos.
In other high school news, Bishop Diego announced last week the hiring of Dean Prophet as boys basketball head coach. Prophet most recently was coach of the Ventura junior varsity team.
UCSB has put tickets for the 2010 Gaucho soccer season up for sale. Several different plans are available. A basic season ticket costing $75 will include admission to all Gaucho men’s and women’s home games and an all-session ticket to the College Cup, the NCAA men’s championship which UCSB will host on December 10-12.
Tickets can be purchased online (ucsbgauchos.com), by phone (893-UCSB) or at the ticket office in the UCSB Intercollegiate Athletics Building. There are free parking spaces outside the building next to Robertson Gym.

SEMANA NAUTICA
June 29-July 12 – Semana Nautica (“marine week”) began in the 1930s when Santa Barbara residents organized sporting activities with visiting Navy seamen. It evolved into an annual sports festival open to the public around the July 4 holiday. There is no charge for spectators at any event, but the festival’s primary objective is to encourage participation. Events in the 73rd Semana Nautica include age-group swimming, ocean swims, a 15-kilometer run, beach volleyball, the Santa Barbara Open tennis tournament and a tug-of-war.
