TOP SPORTING EVENTS: MAY 18-25

UPDATE: San Marcos and Carpinteria advanced to Friday’s first round of the CIF baseball playoffs by winning their wild-card games Tuesday. The Royals blanked Nipomo 6-0 and will play at Mira Costa on Friday in Division 2. Carpinteria earned a Division 4 matchup at El Segundo by defeating Magnolia 5-1. Santa Barbara, seeded 10th in Division 2, will host Los Osos, which beat A.B. Miller 7-1 in the wild-card round. Dos Pueblos lost to Loyola 6-3.

Santa Barbara’s tennis team will host Corona del Mar on Tuesday, May 25, in the Division 1 semifinals.

Three local high school baseball teams will open the postseason playoffs on their home fields on Tuesday, May 18.

San Marcos will play host to Nipomo and Dos Pueblos will take on Loyola in the Division 2 wild-card round of the CIF Southern Section Toyota Championships, while Carpinteria will entertain Magnolia in a Division 4 game. The winning teams will hit the road for the next round of the playoffs on Friday.

Santa Barbara High’s Dons, the Channel League champions, will play a home game Friday against the winner of a wild-card game between Los Osos (Rancho Cucamonga) and A.B. Miller (Fontana).

In college baseball action, UCSB plays a three-game series against UC Davis starting Friday at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.

A variety of fitness activities will happen Saturday morning at Leadbetter Beach during the first Tour de Shore, presented by the Challenged Athletes Foundation. The main event is four hours of spinning in which participants will raise funds for the CAF, which provides recreational opportunities for people with physical challenges. There also will be a 5K run and 2K walk and a family fun zone.

Serious cycling will take place Saturday afternoon during Stage 8 of the Amgen Tour of California. The 84-mile circuit race will start (12:30 p.m.) and finish in Thousand Oaks. It is the closest stage to Santa Barbara on this year’s tour. Lance Armstrong’s new Radio Shack team will be competing with three-time TOC winner Levi Leipheimer, but look for Britain’s Mark Cavendish to be pouring it on in the final sprint as he seeks to win the stage.

The Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table will welcome nine new members to its Hall of Fame next Monday (May 24) at its 43rd annual banquet. Reservations (www.sbroundtable.org) are a must to the event, which also features high school and college athlete-of-the year awards.

SEMANA NAUTICA

June 29-July 12 – Semana Nautica (“marine week”) began in the 1930s when Santa Barbara residents organized sporting activities with visiting Navy seamen. It evolved into an annual sports festival open to the public around the July 4 holiday. There is no charge for spectators at any event, but the festival’s primary objective is to encourage participation. Events in the 73rd Semana Nautica include age-group swimming, ocean swims, a 15-kilometer run, beach volleyball, the Santa Barbara Open tennis tournament and a tug-of-war.
