Downtown Santa Barbara’s First Thursday has gone green. To kick off the month of July, the First Thursday series—a free, monthly celebration of the visual and performing arts in Santa Barbara—is partnering with the Central Coast Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and CIO Solutions to showcase eco-friendly art and architecture.

The show will feature the best and brightest in green architectural design, and there will be a silent auction of eco-inspired work by Santa Barbara artists. All proceeds from this unique fusion of art and awareness will benefit C4, the Central Coast Chapter of USGBC.

On July 1, First Thursday party-goers can make their way to the Built Green Resource Center, Santa Barbara’s very own authority on eco-friendly building practices and materials. The architecture portion of the show will highlight pioneers in the field of green building, displaying key design aspects in the work of Arcadia Studio Landscape Architects, Penfield and Smith Civil Engineers, Paul Poirier + Associates Architects, and others.

Guests will also see the winning design from the USGBC Natural Talent Competition, which partnered with the Salvation Army to challenge students to conceptualize a practical, green home for the residents of New Orleans, LA. They will be able to bid on the work of Santa Barbara artists—such as Tyson Ellis of Eco-Architectural Photography.

To cap off the evening, guests can take a walk through the C4 Build Smart mobile demonstration trailer and ogle the power of green technology firsthand. The trailer, which boasts nontoxic materials, lithium batteries, and smart water practices, is expected to grab the attention of conservation veterans and novices alike—and, true to First Thursday tradition, can all be viewed to the tune of live outdoor music, with a glass of local wine in hand.

First Thursday has a reputation for presenting work on the cutting edge of Santa Barbara’s arts scene, all the while staying true to the city’s priorities. With its blend of eco-consciousness and the aesthetic, July’s Green Building Art Show promises to deliver on all points.

4-1-1: First Thursday attractions take place on the first Thursday of each month, and are free from 5-8 p.m. Visit santabarbaradowntown.com for locations and event listings.
