In the early hours of June 23, just a few feet from the beachfront bike path where tourists pedal surreys, a 25-year-old man died in his sleep. Cyrus Lathrop, a smart, caring person who was battling three illnesses simultaneously, including mental illness and substance use, closed his eyes to the sound of waves crashing on the shore last Tuesday and never woke up.

The specific cause of Lathrop’s death is unknown, and will stay that way until the Sheriff-Coroner’s office issues a report. What happened the previous evening that led him to the beach camp where he died isn’t clear either. But no matter what the details are, his family wants the public to know Lathrop wasn’t just another addict who overdosed.
