October Brings Santa Barbara Botanic Garden Fall Plant Sale
One of our city’s finest jewels is giving the community an opportunity to take a piece of what makes Santa Barbara so special home with them. The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden is having its annual fall sale, beginning for members on October 1 and 2 and continuing through the first week of November.
Not only will the event feature over 5,000 California native and drought-tolerant Mediterranean plants, but also the Dara Emery Lecture. Bob Perry will give a talk titled “Better Than Gold: The Alchemy of Native Plant Gardens,” and sign copies of his latest book, Landscapes for California Gardens. That’s on Friday; October 1, at 6:30 p.m. $20 for members, $25 for non-members.
It all starts Friday at 4:00 p.m. with an exclusive preview sale and personalized help from the staff. Reservations are required, and that event will cost $35 per person. To make reservations for both the Dara Emery Lecture and the Plant Sale Preview Party call 805-682-4726, ext. 102.
The spotlight this year will be on one of the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden’s own cultivars, the iris named “Canyon Sunshine.” It was introduced in 2006 but is making its reappearance following more than a year of difficulty following the Jesusita Fire. Many plants developed by Dara Emery, SBBG horticulturalist and plant breeder, will be available for purchase, most of them bred right here in Santa Barbara.
Opening day is Saturday, October 2. Members-only from 10 a.m. till 12:30 p.m. The gates will open to the public at 12:30 p.m., till 4:00 p.m. The event will continue through November 7.
