Santa Barbara Art Roots: Celebrating 60 Years
The Santa Barbara County Arts Commission, with the Santa Barbara Art Association, and the County Art in Public Places Committee presents an exhibition, Santa Barbara Art Roots: Celebrating 60 Years, to open on 1st Thursday, March 3, from 5-8pm with a 6pm Awards Ceremony. This juried exhibition, on view from February 28–August 19, 2011 celebrates the upcoming anniversary of the deep artistic and historic roots of the Santa Barbara Art Association in Santa Barbara and features a wide variety of artist styles and media. Additional 1st Thursdays in the following months will have a variety of lectures and workshops in the Channing Peake Gallery on the 1st floor of the County Administration Building.
The juror, Hiroko Yoshimoto, born and raised in Japan, moved to Los Angeles as a teen. She has B.A. and M.A. degrees in Art, summa cum laude, from UCLA, and has received numerous awards and grants. She has exhibited widely in galleries and museums in the United States and Japan, and is a retired studio art instructor at Ventura College. Yoshimoto was one of the founders of Studio 83, an artists’ co-op group, which was in operation for 16 years and the Ventura College Friends of the Arts, a non-profit scholarship fund-raising organization. She curated a retrospective exhibition of four legendary Ventura County artists/teachers, which is on view at the Museum of Ventura County in February 2011.

The Santa Barbara Art Association (SBAA) was founded in 1952, and is one of the oldest arts organizations in the Santa Barbara area. In 2012 SBAA will celebrate their 60th Anniversary and this Channing Peake exhibition is a celebratory kick-off of many exhibitions and events to follow. SBAA enjoys over 500 members throughout the County who exhibit in a full range of mediums, from painting and sculpture and ceramics to printmaking, photography, collage and mixed media work. In addition, SBAA sponsors high school and college art scholarships, and has programs in place that support local art programs from Goleta to Carpinteria; and additionally supports a community service organization with proceeds from an Annual Benefit Exhibition; as well as organizes yearly exhibitions, lectures and workshops for our members and the community at large.
The Santa Barbara Art Association has helped to cultivate a rich arts tradition within the city and county of Santa Barbara. The Santa Barbara Art Association is partnering with the Arts Commission for this exhibition to celebrate one of Santa Barbara’s long respected arts organizations that has thrived as an arts catalyst within the community, and has enjoyed the support of its artists and the community for many years.
