TOP SPORTING EVENTS: MAY 12-23

Coming off its first victory over UCLA since 2006, UCSB’s baseball team returns to Big West Conference action this weekend. The Gauchos host a three-game series against UC Irvine starting Friday at 3 p.m. Irvine’s Anteaters (10-5 Big West, 31-13 overall) are ranked 17th in the nation. The Gauchos (6-9, 21-21) hope their 5-4 victory over 13th-ranked UCLA on Wednesday evening at Westwood will give them a boost going into the last three weekends of conference play.

SBCC advanced in the California Community College baseball playoffs last week, winning a three-game series against Riverside. The seventh-seeded Vaqueros (24-15) will take on No. 4 Orange Coast (30-8) in the Southern Cal Super Regionals on Friday at Santa Ana College. Third-seeded Santa Ana (27-12) and No. 8 Cerritos are the other participants in the double-elimination tournament that will send the winner to the state’s final four.

Sophomore left-hander Chris Joyce (7-0, 1.78 ERA) leads SBCC’s pitching staff that will try to shut down Orange Coast’s potent offense (8.2 runs per game).

In high school CIF playoffs, Santa Barbara High hits the road for a second-round tennis match Friday. The Dons lost their first-round match in the volleyball playoffs this week, as did Dos Pueblos, San Marcos, Bishop Diego and Laguna Blanca. The baseball and softball playoffs will start next week.

Carpinteria High hosts the CIF Division 4 track and field prelims Saturday. The division includes Serra, which features USC football recruit George Farmer, runner-up in the state 100 last year. All four of Serra’s relay teams, boys and girls, are among the four fastest in the state this year. Other state contenders hail from St. Mary’s, Louisville, JSerra, Templeton, Oaks Christian and Santa Ynez.
