Santa Barbara resident Louis Langlais, the U.S. Department of Defense announced today, was one of 17 SEAL Team Six members killed when their Chinook transport helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan on August 6.

Louis Langlais

All 30 service members aboard – including Air Force Special Operations members and an Army helicopter crew — died in a crash that represents the largest single-day loss of American life during the 10-year war. Eight Afghan commandos were also killed.

Langlais, 45 — a Master Chief Petty Officer in the elite SEAL unit credited with killing Osama Bin Laden — lived in the Hope Avenue neighborhood. He attended Santa Barbara Middle School and Santa Barbara High School. Langlais began his military career as a Navy diver before becoming a SEAL, eventually serving multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Langlais is survived by his wife and two young sons. Information about memorial donations can be found at the Navy SEAL Foundation Web site or by calling (757) 363-7490.
