Santa Barbara native and celebrated goofy-foot Bobby Martinez made some major waves in the professional surfing universe this past week with an expletive-charged public rant against the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP), the governing body of surfing’s World Tour. Increasingly disillusioned in recent months by the contest format and ranking system of the ASP, Martinez, who is currently ranked 31st in the world, announced leading up to last week’s Quicksilver Pro in New York that the ASP-sanctioned event would be his last. However, his retirement came even earlier than expected as he was kicked off the tour mid-contest by officials after taking to his soapbox during a post-heat interview broadcast live on the Internet.
