In honor of this month, Santa Barbara County Animal Services is pairing up with the Santa Barbara County Animal Care Foundation to offer a free microchip to all dogs adopted from one of the three County Animal Shelters.

This year, Adopt-A-Dog Month focuses on what an adopted dog can bring to your life. Whether you are looking for a running partner, agility champion, or a fuzzy face to greet you after a long days work, Santa Barbara County Animal Services has hundreds of dogs waiting to fill that role. There are also many health benefits to owning a dog. Dogs have been shown to improve your mood, help control blood pressure, stave off loneliness, reduce stress, and encourage you to get out and exercise.

During the month of October, every dog adopted from one of the three Santa Barbara County Animal Services shelters will receive a free microchip, a $40 value. Registration of the microchip is also included. Microchips are a permanent form of identification and Animal Services has seen many animals reunited with their owners as a result of the pet having a chip.

Along with the microchip, all dogs adopted from Santa Barbara County Animal Services are spayed or neutered, up to date with vaccinations, given a health check, and receive a one year license. Adoptions also include a small bag of Science Diet food, a complimentary health exam, and a lifetime of love!

Another highlight of Adopt-A-Dog Month is the popular Dogtoberfest celebration. On Saturday, October 8, 2011 from 10am to 3pm at Solvang Park, you can find adoptable dogs from all three Santa Barbara County Animal Shelters enjoying the festivities. Dogtoberfest includes adoptable dogs, Weiner Dog Races, demonstrations, contests, educational booths, as well as a vaccine and licensing clinic.

Visit one of the three Animal Services Shelters today; in Santa Maria at 548 W. Foster Rd, in Lompoc at 1501 W. Central Ave, or in Santa Barbara at 5473 Overpass Rd. Adoption hours are Monday through Friday from 10am until 4:30pm, Lompoc is closed for lunch from 12:30-1:30pm, and Saturdays from 10am until 3:30pm. Your new best friend is waiting!
